Persian rug or Persian carpet which is also known as Iranian carpet is a sort of textile product used for a wide variety of purposes. It is produced for home use, local sale and export. When Iranian culture is carefully considered, weaving carpets has always been an indispensable part of Persian culture and Iranian art.  Persian and Iranian designs can reflect the history of Iran and its people. The carpets woven in the Safavid inIsfahanduring the sixteenth century are famous for their elegant colors and artistical design, and are treasured in museums and private collections all over the world today.

 

Carpets which have been woven by different raw material in various cities like Tabriz, Kerman, Mashhad, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain and Qom are characterized by their specific weaving techniques and use of high-quality materials, colors and patterns. Carpets have also been woven in villages and tribes. Based on their traditions, raw material, colors, designs and patterns, it’s possible to distinguish them.

 

.Small village weavers often made rugs and carpets with bolder designs which were not completely preplanned, so they could be easily distinguished from more elegant artistic designs. This kind of rugs is called Gabbeh .
