Gabbeh

Gabbeh is one of the traditional Iranian carpets which is hand woven and made of natural wool. Hand woven Iranian Gabbeh is high pile rugs which can keep village houses warm. The designs of this kind of rugs are originated from the creative mind of the weaver and seldom a pre planned design is available.

The first floor coverings which were used in houses were animal skins. Gradually the human tried to domesticate some animals with wool skin, so they could do the spinning process and weave some high pile rugs. These were the primary woven products which had natural yarn. One of these rugs is called Gabbeh which is an Iranian wool rug and was first woven in Lor and GHashghaei tribes.

Gabbeh means thick and tough and as it seems from the name, it is a thick woven rug with high pile. The primary purpose of weaving this rug was to keep the house warm. Nowadays this kind of rug is really popular in

different parts of the world. There various designs for this kind of rugs which are based on the geographical features. Something that is really interesting about Gabbeh is that there is no preplanned design. So the creativity of the weaver is the key point. That is why you can’t find two Gabbeh rugs which are exactly the same. To weave this rug, mostly light and main colors are used.

Machine made Gabbeh is produced according to some similar designs to handmade ones but because the raw material is different, it is just a floor covering used in houses and various places, and it does have the feature of being warm.
